New report shows obesity levels in America are still on the increase.
The ‘F as in Fat' report concludes that of the top 10 most obese states in the US, eight were in the south, highlighting a clear north-south divide. Southern states also display the highest rates of diabetes, high blood pressure and highest physical inactivity levels. Figures for childhood obesity rates are also concerning with 30 of the 50 states recording levels of 30% or above, compared to adult obesity levels that are only about 30% in four of the 50 states.
These figures show why there is increasing pressure on health services with the correlation between the increasing obesity and obesity-related illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer. The report looks at how governmental financial backing and a national strategy will help to halt the increase in prevalence of obesity and obesity-related diseases.
Reports for England indicate that by 2050, 60% of males and 50% of females could be obese.
