By buying Fairtrade products, you can help to eliminate poverty through your everyday shopping.

What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade aims to provide an improved deal in developing countries by creating better terms of trade, like setting minimum prices and providing long contracts so that workers and producers can enjoy a better standard of living.

The Fairtrade Organisation

The Fairtrade organisation was set up in 1992 by a group of charities. It licenses use of the FAIRTRADE Mark on products in the UK in accordance with agreed standards. The ultimate aim of Fairtrade is to achieve complete justice and sustainable development within trade structures.

Fairtrade works to help improve the welfare and conditions of the poor and disadvantaged, by:

Setting minimum prices so that farmers are not at the mercy of the world markets.

Setting an additional price called the Fairtrade premium. It's designed to fund projects to improve communities' social, economic and environmental conditions.

Setting standards to ensure workers are paid decent wages, have the right to join trade unions, have good health and safety standards and are provided with adequate housing where relevant.

Putting the Fairtrade mark on all products which follow these sets of standards, so consumers understand they are buying ethical products.
